The Older the Soap, the Better: Why Goat Milk Soap Improves With Age

When people think about handmade products, they often assume fresher is always better. With traditionally made cold-process soap, that isn't necessarily true.

In fact, a well-made bar of soap can get better with age.

When we make our goat milk soap here at Serenity Acres Farm™, every batch goes through a curing period before it is ever offered for sale. During that time, the soap isn't simply sitting on a shelf waiting for us to box it. Important changes are taking place inside that bar.

What Happens as Handmade Soap Ages?

One of the biggest changes is simple: water continues to evaporate from the soap.

Our soap is made using fresh goat milk from our own herd along with oils and the other ingredients necessary for traditional cold-process soapmaking. After the soap is made and cut into bars, it begins curing.

As the weeks and months pass, moisture gradually leaves the bar. Less water means a harder, denser bar of soap.

And a harder bar generally means something our customers appreciate:

It lasts longer in the shower or at the sink.

A newer, properly cured bar is absolutely ready to use. But give that same bar additional time to age and it can become even harder and longer-lasting.

Our daughter, Rose, still has soap that we made back in 2021.

Yes, 2021!

She uses it at her sink, and we've noticed how incredibly long those older bars last. After years of additional drying and aging, those bars are HARD. They don't disappear nearly as quickly with repeated handwashing.

It's actually become one of our favorite real-life examples of why you don't need to worry if you discover an older Serenity Acres Farm™ soap tucked away in a cabinet.

Does Handmade Goat Milk Soap Expire?

When properly stored, a well-formulated cold-process soap can remain usable for a long time. Its fragrance may become lighter over the years, and the appearance can change somewhat depending on the ingredients and how it was stored, but age alone doesn't automatically make an older bar "bad."

The key is proper storage. Keep unused bars somewhere cool and dry, away from excessive humidity and standing water.

Once you're using the bar, allowing it to dry between uses will also help it last longer. A draining soap dish is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of any handmade soap.

So Don't Be Afraid to Stock Up

If you have several favorite scents, there's no reason to panic because you haven't used them immediately.

That extra bar waiting patiently in your linen closet isn't necessarily getting worse.

It's getting harder.

And when you finally pull it out months—or even years—later, you may discover that it lasts considerably longer than you expected.
